Brief Biography

Pingzhi Fan received his MSc degree in Computer Science from the Southwest Jiaotong University, PRC, in 1987, and Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the Hull University, U.K., in 1994. From 1994 to 1997, he worked for Hull University and Leeds University (UK) as a postdoctoral and research fellow. He is a visiting/guest professor for Leeds University (UK, 1997-), Mikkeli Polytechnic (Finland, 1996), Georgia State University (USA, 2001), FernUniversity (Germany, 2002), National Chonbuk University (Korea, 2003), Tsukuba University (Japan, 2005), and Shanghai Jiaotong University (China, 1999-). He is currently a distinguished professor of the Southwest Jiaotong University, the director of the institute of mobile communications, and the director of the International Cooperation Research Centre "Communications & Sensor Networks for Modern Transportation (CSNMT)" (Ministry of Sci & Tech, China). He is a recipient of the UK ORS Award (1992), the Outstanding Young Scientist Award by NSFC (1998). He was the chief scientist of a national 973 research project (MoST, 2012-2016), IEEE VTS Distinguished Lecturer (2015-2019), and a fellow of IEEE, IET, CIE and CIC.

He served as a general chair or TPC chair of a number of international conferences (including two IEEE technical co-sponsored series conferences, IWSDA & HMWC, for which he is the lead founder), and is the guest editor-in-chief, guest editor or editorial member of several international journals. He is the founding chair of IEEE VTS BJ Chapter and IEEE ComSoc CD Chapter, founding chair of IEEE CD Section. He also served as a board member of IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific), IET Council, and IET Asia-Pacific Region.

He has published over 500 research works, including eight books and edited books published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd, RSP (1996), Springer (2004), IEEE Press (2003,2006,2007), Nova Science Publishers (2007), PHEI (2002) and SWJTU Press (1989), respectively, over 200 English journal (IEEE/IEE/IEICE etc) papers, as well as over 120 Chinese journal papers and over 200 referred international conference papers, etc. He also holds 22 granted Chinese and PCT patents. His publications have received over 8400 citations (h-index=42, Google Scholar, 22 August 2017).

Research Interests

Dr Fan’s research interests include: high mobility vehicular communications, 5G technologies, wireless networks for big data, signal design for wireless communications, information theory & coding, etc.
